On a Raised Surface

Butterfly: Deeper Angles Thanks to a Raised Surface

Medium

In the butterfly position, one partner lies on their back at the edge of a raised surface — a bed edge, a sturdy table, a wide windowsill — while the other partner stands. The lying partner's legs get lifted, resting on the standing partner's shoulders or held at the ankles.

How it works

The height is what makes the difference: because the standing partner doesn't have to crouch or stretch, you get an angle that's nearly impossible on a flat mattress — often with deeper penetration than other positions allow. The standing partner's hands are completely free to hold hips, support thighs, or add extra stimulation.

What actually matters

  • The height of the surface needs to genuinely fit — too low and the standing partner ends up crouching; too high and the angle turns uncomfortable.
  • A pillow or rolled towel under the lying partner's hips makes a noticeable difference to both comfort and angle.
  • The lying partner's head and neck need support if the surface is hard — a pillow under the head helps.

Who it's especially good for

Anyone looking for an angle the usual positions don't offer. Because this angle can allow for deeper penetration than you're used to, it's worth starting slow here specifically — talk early about whether the pace and depth feel right, instead of pushing the pace from the start.
